With summer almost here, it’s important to remind drivers that they share the road with others who may be far more vulnerable to injuries on our roadways. Such is the case with motorcyclists. As motorcycles are lighter, less stable, and less visible than larger vehicles, they are at higher risk in a collision.
Motorcycle Casualty Collisions
The last year we have official data for is 2015. That year, the total number of motorcycles involved in casualty collisions in Alberta alone was 653 and had been relatively consistent throughout the previous four years. A motorcyclist is far more vulnerable than an automobile driver when it comes to a collision so it is important for a motorcyclist to take every precaution when out on the road this summer.
Reduce Your Risk of Injury
Of course, there is no way to completely eliminate the risk of an accident but it is possible to reduce that risk by following common sense rules to ensure you are as safe as possible when sharing the road with other motorists this summer.
Wear Your Helmet
Always wear a helmet. Helmets must be worn by riders of motorcycles, off-road vehicles, power bicycles and mopeds. Not only is this the law but a helmet lessens the risk for serious head trauma in an accident. Your helmet must be labeled that it meets the standards of CSA, DOT, BSI. the applicable Snell Memorial Foundation standard, or the ECE.
Wear Visible and Protective Clothing
Wearing clothing that is bright and colorful makes you far more visible to others on the road. Many collisions ensue because motorcycles are simply not seen. It helps to have reflective or fluorescent features on your clothing and helmet, particularly at night. Make sure your clothing is as protective as possible when riding.
Follow Roadway Laws
Always make sure you abide by the rules of the road while you are riding. Use all signals when changing lanes. Make sure you aren’t in others’ blind spots. When you drive defensively, you are taking steps to ensure that you will make it to your destination safely.
Never Drive While Impaired
Impaired driving is one of the most common causes of motorcycle collisions today. Your judgment, your vision, and your reaction time are greatly reduced if you have been drinking or using any drugs. Always find an alternative form of transportation if you are out and need to get somewhere.
Riding With a Passenger
You may only carry a passenger if your motorcycle is specifically designed for it. This means that they must occupy a seat designed for passengers and also use appropriate footrests.
Get Professional Training
Even though, as a learner, you needed to be supervised while learning to ride a motorcycle, you may want to consider professional formal training. Today, nearly 90 percent of crashes involving motorcyclists involve riders who had no formal instruction.
